Getting a good start in Ark: Survival Ascended can be the difference between thriving and getting eaten by a dilo in your first 10 minutes. Here’s a beginner-friendly guide to help you get off on the right foot:

🛠️ 1. Choose a Safe Starting Zone

Start in an easy spawn zone like:

  • South Zone 1 (The Island)
  • Herbivore Island (if available)

Avoid northern or mountainous areas early on—they tend to have more aggressive predators.

🥽 2. Pick Up Stones and Punch Trees (Carefully)

You’ll need to gather:

  • Stone (from the ground)
  • Thatch & Wood (punch trees, then use tools)
  • Fiber (from bushes)

Avoid punching too many trees—you’ll hurt yourself. Make a pickaxe ASAP from the “Stone Pick” engram.

🔨 3. Craft Basic Tools and Clothes

Essential early gear:

  • Stone Pick
  • Stone Hatchet
  • Spear (x3) – They break!
  • Cloth Armor

This gives you basic protection and combat ability.

🦕 4. Avoid Dangerous Dinos (For Now)

Early on, avoid:

  • Raptors
  • Trikes (they hit HARD)
  • Carnotaurus
  • Anything with teeth or spikes

Do hunt:

  • Dodos (easy XP and meat)
  • Lystrosaurus (easy tame + XP boost)

🏠 5. Build a Starter Base

Once you reach Level 5–8, build a basic thatch or wood hut:

  • 3×3 foundation
  • Bed (acts as a respawn point)
  • Storage box
  • Campfire
  • Mortar & Pestle (for narcotics later)

Set up near water but away from cliffs and predator hotspots.

🐕 6. Tame a Basic Dino

At Level 5–10, start taming:

  • Dilophosaurs – decent for early defense
  • Parasaur – good pack animal and early mount
  • Lystrosaurus – passive tame, XP booster

Use berries (mejoberries are best) and Narcoberries to keep them unconscious.

🔋 7. Level Up Wisely

Focus on:

  • Weight (carry more items)
  • Stamina (run/fight longer)
  • Health (survive longer)
  • Some Fortitude (resist cold/heat)

🗺️ 8. Explore Smartly

Don’t wander too far too fast. Stick near safe zones, and only move into deeper areas when:

  • You have a reliable weapon
  • You’ve tamed a decent dino
  • You have a bed to respawn at

🧪 9. Farm XP Efficiently

  • Crafting gives great XP early on.
  • Kill small dinos.
  • Use the Lystrosaurus XP boost.
  • Focus on learning and crafting engrams.

🦖 10. Plan for a Taming Pen

Soon you’ll want to tame bigger dinos. Build a stone taming pen for safe knockouts and traps. This becomes essential as you progress into mid-game.
